Welcome to the website of the European Climate Assessment & Dataset project. Presented is information on changes in weather and climate extremes, as well as the daily dataset needed to monitor and analyse these extremes. ECA&D was initiated by the ECSN in 1998 and has received financial support from the EUMETNET and the European Commission.

What's new?

The database is updated until: Feb 28, 2015.

February 2015 - Updates received from the Spanish Meteorological Services Aemet for all their stations up to the 2014/12/31.

February 2015 - Updates received from Hellenic National Meteorological Service (Greece) for 13 stations (23 rain gauges) running up to 2004/12/31.

February 2015 - Following changes in the data policy at the Deutscher WetterDienst (DWD), most series provided by DWD have the status "downloadable". Original data and metadata are provided at the DWD ftp site.

February 2015 - The Regional Agency for Environmental Protection (ARPA) Vallee d'Aosta provided data for 5 stations.

January 2015 - The Portugese winery Sogrape Vinhos S.A. provided data for 20 stations and updates these monthly.

January 2015 - Updates received from MeteoSwiss for 28 stations. MeteoSwiss now provide monthly updates of their data.

December 2014 - Europe will have its warmest year on record in 2014. See the Climate Indicator Bulletin on this remarkable year.

November 2014 - New data for cloud cover, humidity and pressure for Croatian stations added.

ECA&D forms the backbone of the climate data node in the Regional Climate Centre (RCC) for WMO Region VI (Europe and the Middle East) since 2010. The data and information products contribute to the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS).

Participants and data

map of participating countries

Today, ECA&D is receiving data from 66 participants for 62 countries and the ECA dataset contains 40630 series of observations for 12 elements at 10259 meteorological stations throughout Europe and the Mediterranean (see Daily data > Data dictionary). 77% of these daily series can be downloaded from this website for non-commercial research and education. Participation to ECA&D is open to anyone maintaining daily station data. If you want to join please contact us. See our data policy for more details.

E-OBS gridded dataset

E-OBS image

E-OBS version 10.0 has been released. E-OBS is a daily gridded observational dataset for precipitation, temperature and sea level pressure in Europe based on ECA&D information. The full dataset covers the period 1950-01-01 until 2013-12-31. It has originally been developed and updated as parts of the ENSEMBLES (EU-FP6) and EURO4M (EU-FP7) projects. Currently it is maintained and elaborated as part of the UERRA project (EU-FP7).
