Welcome to the website of the European Climate Assessment & Dataset project. Presented is information on changes in weather and climate extremes, as well as the daily dataset needed to monitor and analyse these extremes. ECA&D was initiated by the ECSN in 1998 and has received financial support from the EUMETNET and the European Commission.

What's new?

The database is updated until: May 31, 2016.

June 2016 - E-OBS version 13.0 has been released.

March 2016 - The definition of the R75pTOT, R95pTOT and R99pTOT indices have been changed. These indices now produce the amount of precipitation (in mm) related to these heavy, severe and extreme precipitation days respectively, rather than the percentage of this precipitation amount with respect to the total precipitation amount. See the Indices dictionary for further details.

March 2016 - Updates have been recieved from the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

February 2016 - The Swedish series have been updated by SMHI and will be updated every month.

February 2016 - The Danish time series have been updated and re-included with correct day shift and elements code after consultation with J. Cappelen from DMI.

February 2016 - Updates of data until 2013/12/31 are recieved from the Meteorological Service of Cyprus.

February 2016 - Twelve stations with temperature and precipitation have been shared by the North Portugal Ministry of Agriculture.

January 2016 - Rescued series for stations Riva del Grada (max. and min. temperatures and cloud cover) from as early as 1874 and station Rovereto (cloud cover) from 1919 has been shared by Dr. Brugnara (University of Bern).

ECA&D forms the backbone of the climate data node in the Regional Climate Centre (RCC) for WMO Region VI (Europe and the Middle East) since 2010. The data and information products contribute to the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS).

Participants and data

map of participating countries

Today, ECA&D is receiving data from 67 participants for 62 countries and the ECA dataset contains 42767 series of observations for 12 elements at 10481 meteorological stations throughout Europe and the Mediterranean (see Daily data > Data dictionary). 77% of these daily series can be downloaded from this website for non-commercial research and education. Participation to ECA&D is open to anyone maintaining daily station data. If you want to join please contact us. See our data policy for more details.

E-OBS gridded dataset

E-OBS image

E-OBS version 12.0 has been released. E-OBS is a daily gridded observational dataset for precipitation, temperature and sea level pressure in Europe based on ECA&D information. The full dataset covers the period 1950-01-01 until 2015-06-30. It has originally been developed and updated as parts of the ENSEMBLES (EU-FP6) and EURO4M (EU-FP7) projects. Currently it is maintained and elaborated as part of the UERRA project (EU-FP7).
